With AI transforming the world using its wide-ranging tools, Google is all set to incorporate this outstanding tool by introducing new features in Google Maps and GMB. Most of its features will be commerce-related for instance pickup and delivery attributes, a curbside pickup pilot program and an indoor live view feature. According to Google, these features will not only ease the user's experience but will also contribute to an eco-friendly environment. There was a time when terms like Artificial Intelligence and augmented reality were rare to be heard but with increasing technology, these two tools are playing a major role in improving user experience and ensuring ease to human work.

Google Maps are the most frequently used tool by people to discover places and estimate the best route possible to reach their destination. Now, Google has announced some special features in Google Maps which are discussed below:

  • Pickup and Delivery Attributes: In the present, you can search for some restaurant's locations, their contacts and ratings but Google by incorporating the pickup and delivery feature will display pickup and delivery options, order minimums, fees, delivery information etc. in the GMB profiles. Information like these will be added by the businesses to their GMB profiles or with a Google partner. This feature will be started on mobile search with InstaCart and Albertsons Co. Stores in the U.S. The company is also looking forward to adding this feature to Google Maps later this year.
  • Pickup with Google Maps: When everything around us is rushing by, waiting for something feels exhausting. But Google in partnership with Fred Meyer Supermarkets in Portland has ensured to provide the best services to its users with the pickup with Google Maps feature. Starting this summer, this program will enable users to enter their order details in Google maps to facilitate the pickup process. The users will be notified about when to pick up their orders and at the same time, their arrival time will also be updated based on location and traffic information. Apart from this, customers can also add their parking spots for the pickup. As for now, this feature will only be available for the Fred Meyer Supermarkets in Portland and the businesses possessing a curbside pickup program.
  • Indoor Live View: If you are running late for a flight and lost at the airport, don’t worry because Google Maps have got you covered. Indoor Live View is an augmented reality walking navigation feature that will be available within airports, stations and malls. This feature is powered by global localization, AI technology that scans the view of street images to understand the user’s orientation. Google is also making advancements to enable this feature to understand the location and altitude of objects. This feature is live in selected malls of Chicago, Long Island, Los Angeles, Newark, San Fransisco and Seattle. This feature will move to the airports and malls of Tokyo and Zurich in the coming months.
  • Updated Directions Interface: Google has enhanced some features in Google Maps where the users had to toggle between tabs while discovering the best routes with a car or bike. With this update, users will get a comprehensive of how long it will take to reach their destination if they are using a bike, car or a ride-sharing app. With the help of machine learning, the users' preferred mode of travel will be prioritized along with the most famous mode preferred in that particular city. For example, if you prefer travelling by bike every day, Google Maps will recommend you more biking routes. This feature will be available in the Android and IOS systems within a few months.

As mentioned earlier, while introducing these features for a better user experience Google has also ensured eco-friendliness. With the update direction interface feature being one of them the several other features that will ensure eco-friendliness are mentioned below.

  • Eco-friendly driving routes: Carbon emission footprint increases the earth’s temperature with climate changes such as extreme precipitation, warming of oceans etc. Google with its initiative of spreading eco-friendliness will select a route with less carbon emission footprint. It's up to the users if they want to use the route with less carbon footprint or the fastest route present by default in their settings.
  • Low emission zone notifications: With its launch in Germany, Netherlands, France, Spain and the UK this feature will make the drivers aware of the low emission zones if they are entering one so they’ll know whether their vehicle is allowed in the area or not.
  • Weather and air quality layers: This feature will provide prior information to the users about the weather forecast and air quality of a particular place beforehand. For this feature, Google has partnered with The Weather Company, AirNow.gov and the Central Pollution Board of India with its first launch in the US, Australia and India.

How these features will change lives?

After the announcement by Google about its upcoming features it is very clear that the company is focusing more on user experience eradicating all the difficulties they face at the same time. The pickup and delivery attribute is not only an advantage for the users but also an opportunity for the business to gain more customers by providing information like the products available, the delivery information etc. The Indoor Live view will save the time of users running across floors by directing them to a particular location. By introducing these features, Google is all set to push its digital mapping and commerce giving tough competition to other competitors offering the same services.
